description An area of outstanding natural beauty Nationally recognized and preserved, the Columbia River Gorge is rich both in culture and in history. This site has been home to tribes and communities for over 13,000 years. But it's not just home, it's a destination. For thousands of years, this gorge has served as a pivotal connection between new lands and between different peoples. In 1805, Lewis and Clark traveled through the canyon to reach the Pacific. In 1859, J.P. McGowan pursued a federally commissioned journey to the area, where he invested his earnings from the California Gold Rush into one of the first fish packing stations and cannery ever recorded. In 1981, the Columbia River was noted as the first site of white sturgeon spawning and hatchery. Evidence has proven the Columbia River Gorge to be an integral contribution to American life, exploration, and innovation. Here, there is an undeniable natural beauty and an open land for opportunity. Here, there has been centuries of locals, millions of visitors, hundreds of recreations, and countless breathtaking views. Here, there is the sublime. The perfect destination for family holidays on a budget. Experience the outdoors and appreciate the surrounding natural beauty, visit the Fishery on the Columbia River Gorge!
